Read: 4020

The Qixi Festival, often known as Chinese Valentine's Day, is cherished in China and other parts of East Asia. Celebrated annually on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, this romantic tradition has its roots deep within centuries-old legend. In 2024, it will be observed on August 8th by the Gregorian Calendar.

This festival carries a poignant love story of Niulang the Cowherd and Zhinu the Weaving Md, which has been passed down through generations. According to legend, Niulang was an ordinary cowherd living a simple life when he met Zhinua beautiful skilled weaver who was the daughter of the Jade Emperor and Queen Mother of the West in heaven. Their love blossomed and they married secretly, rsing two children together. However, their relationship was forbidden; as Zhinu was immortal, her absence from heaven disrupted celestial order.

Upon discovering Niulang's marriage to a mortal, the Queen Mother ordered Zhinu back to the heavens. To separate the lovers, she created the Milky Waya vast river of starswhich formed an insurmountable gulf between them. Yet, moved by their love and sorrow, magpies came to their d and formed a bridge across the Milky Way once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar monthallowing Niulang and Zhinu to reunite for one night.

The essence of this story is now celebrated during the Qixi Festival as a symbol of enduring love and devotion:

Once golden wind meets jade dew,

They meld together, forming frosty morning hues.

Every year, Silver River bridges with dawn's stars

How far apart are the realms of the morning?

Tenderness flows like water, beauty dances in dreams,

Can I bear to look back on the path of magpies' bridge?

If hearts unite forevermore, why do they need to linger together each day?
